Senator Stephen Conroy announces retirement from politics
Senator Stephen Conroy, Deputy Opposition Leader in the Senate and former Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, has announced his resignation from politics, effective from the end of the current sitting of the parliament.
Citing a wish to spend more time with family as his reason for quitting politics, Senator Conroy leaves behind a 20-year career in the Australian Senate.
Senator Conroy counts the National Broadband Network (NBN) as the greatest achievement of his political life. SAGE-AU strongly criticised Senator Conroy's proposed Mandatory Internet Filtering scheme in 2007, a proposal which was ultimately never carried through.
